This year, I’m going to try taking on a nightmare closet. My closet is a mess. It’s haunting me to organize it. I’ve lived in my home for 9 months now and I still haven’t taken the time to hang all of our clothes in our bedroom closet. I’m going to try to take small steps towards progression. I wanted to lay out a vision that would benefit both myself AND my husband. He has significantly less clothes than I do so it’s no secret that I’d take most of the space in our small closet. He’s used to it by now.
For 9 months, I’ve been stuck trying to figure out exactly how I want the layout of such a small closet to be organized. August 24, 2025, the vision finally opened my eyes. I looked at my closet and envisioned a small space made to be organized and structured. Spiritually, I feel that closets are a corner of your brain that reflect a certain level of mental stability. Just because it isn’t seen much, shouldn’t mean that it isn’t tended to. Well, mine is very much in sight. And we don’t want to look at it while it looks the way it does.
It’s a bit hard to get a good picture of the whole closet because of the nightmare-like state that it’s in. I am clearly DESPERATE for some good old fashion, small closet organization. Our past homes have had bigger closets, so, this adjustment is helping us to lighten our baggage and get rid of so many things that we no longer need.
Currently, there’s no closet rod to hang our clothes in our closet. So, I did some research and found these cute golden rods that I can screw into the wall of our closet. Amazon had some beautiful gold rods, a 2-pack of 34.5in. industrial style. I’m also considering adding a 54in. gold industrial bar above these smaller two. As for accessories, the goal is to install (4) 12in. gold bars to hang along the short wall of our closet.
My first option to complete this project, is to simply buy all of the materials needed from Amazon. Overall, I estimate the cost to complete this project will be approximately $150. Personally, that price is the most I’ve ever invested into my closet organization. At this point, it’s worth it knowing that I can fold or hang my clean laundry and my toddlers won’t have access to play on my clean clothes. Sometimes with kids, it’s like doing the same chore every day all week. It can be overwhelming sometimes so I’ve decided that this closet organization was an investment towards my peace of mind.
My second option to complete this task, customize the shelves and gold rods on my own. A much more time consuming task compared to the first option of completion, but definitely worth it. Especially, if you’re like me, wanting gain handy experience around the house. I don’t mind a good DIY project. I don’t mind building the things I like because sometimes it’s hard trying to describe what I want and often, it’s expensive to ask someone to custom create something in my image. It takes time and perseverance but the overall fulfillment is worth it.
To complete the vision, I need a pop. I’m thinking of finding live edge oak wood to add two shelves above our clothes for shoes and bags. I also want to add a subtle touch of color. I’m looking into small rug options to make cleaning and dusting a bit easier. We have really old wood floors and they can be very high maintenance to keep clean so I figure a rug would minimize the dust.
The rough draft I have for this project is hard to commit to, so I know that my thoughts are bound to change, as art usually does when you live in a creatively fluent headspace. I have so many ideas about how I can accent this intimate space without making it too busy.
If I’m being completely transparent, I have no idea when this project will be complete. I want to say next week, I want to say next month… but honestly, every time I plan, I’m blessed with perspective. So for now, I’m continuing to plan and organize until I have a clear vision for execution. There are many paths I can take towards the execution of organizing my small closet spaces.
I’m excited to try this project. I hope it supports much more effective laundry habits and more clarity in our home. There’s so many visions and ideas I have for the spaces in our home, each reflecting different styles and aspect of our lives. If you want to stay updated on this project, it’ll be in the projects section of my website when it is complete. Along with other ideas and visions that I have for spaces.
